Initial Ionization of Compressible Turbulence

چکیده
We study the effects of the initial conditions of turbulent molecular clouds on the ionization structure in newly formed H ii regions, using three-dimensional, photon-conserving radiative transfer in a precomputed density field from three-dimensional compressible turbulence. Our results show that the initial density structure of the gas cloud can play an important role in the resulting structure of the H ii region. The propagation of the ionization fronts, the shape of the resulting H ii region, and the total mass ionized depend on the properties of the turbulent density field. Cuts through the ionized regions generally show “butterfly” shapes rather than spherical ones, while emission measure maps are more spherical if the turbulence is driven on scales small compared to the size of the H ii region. The ionization structure can be described by an effective clumping factor ζ = 〈n〉 · 〈n〉/〈n〉, where n is number density of the gas. The larger the value of ζ, the less mass is ionized, and the more irregular the H ii region shapes. Because we do not follow dynamics, our results apply only to the early stage of ionization when the speed of the ionization fronts remains much larger than the sound speed of the ionized gas, or Alfvén speed in magnetized clouds if it is larger, so that the dynamical effects can be negligible. Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Subsonic Compressible Flow through Rectangular Microchannel
In this study, turbulent compressible gas flow in a rectangular micro-channel is numerically investigated. The gas flow assumed to be in the subsonic regime up to Mach number about 0.7. Five low and high Reynolds number RANS turbulence models are used for modeling the turbulent flow. Two types of mesh are generated depending on the employed turbulence model. The computations are performed for R...

For weakly compressible turbulent fluctuations there exists a small parameter, the square of the fluctuating Mach number, that allows an investigation using a perturbative treatment. The consequences of such a perturbative analysis in three different subject areas are described: 1) initial conditions in direct numerical simulations, 2) an explanation for the oscillations seen in the compressibl...

To improve the calculation of the flow properties of an aerospike nozzle, different turbulence models were investigated in this study. The primary shape of the nozzle plug is determined through utilizing an approximate method. The flow field is, then, simulated using the Navier-Stokes equations for compressible flows. The commercial computational fluid dynamics code Fluent is used to simulate t...

متن کاملConsistent Initial Conditions for the Dns of Compressible Turbulence
Relationships between diverse thermodynamic quantities appropriate to weakly compressible turbulence are derived. It is shown that for turbulence of a finite turbulent Mach number there is a finite effect of compressibility. A methodology for generating initial conditions for the fluctuating pressure, density and dilatational velocity is given which is consistent with finite Mach number effects...
